Measurements and engineering analysis
We use a crack-gauge ruler to measure crack widths and a spirit level to check level. We analyze the observations against applicable codes, considering likely causes and the implications for safety and serviceability. The assessment addresses both structural safety and whether the building can function as intended.
We also consider local conditions, including Walnut Creek’s large day-to-night temperature range. Where Clear Lake soil is present, poor drainage and seasonal groundwater need attention when assessing foundations and below-grade work. The water table can sit several feet down in late summer and rise close to the surface during wet winter months.
Mapped liquefaction zones cover much of Ygnacio Valley and major drainages, including Tice and San Ramon Creeks. We treat earthquake-related ground movement as a site-specific concern in those areas, not as a condition shared by every Walnut Creek property.
What the written report includes
We prepare a written report recording the observed conditions, our engineering conclusions, and recommended actions or next steps. It distinguishes what we observed from what we conclude those conditions mean, then sets out the recommendations.
When reviewing the report, look for all three parts. A description of a condition alone does not give you the engineering conclusion or the next step.

Hourly consultation and work
Structural engineer consultation or work is billed at $100–$220 per hour. That is an hourly rate, not a total project price. Before authorizing work, ask us to clarify the rate that will apply and what work the consultation or assignment will cover.
What to Expect
From the first conversation on, this is the order things happen in.
-
Tell Us What You Need
A short call is enough for us to understand the project and what it will take.
-
Research First
We review what's already on file, records, plans, and prior work, before anyone heads out.
-
Clear, Written Price
You get the scope and the price in writing before any work starts. No surprises.
Depending on what we find, that can mean:
- Visit the property and examine accessible structural areas, including foundations, basements, crawlspaces, and framing.
- Observe and document visible cracking, settlement, deflection, and framing conditions with notes, measurements, and photographs.
What It Typically Costs
Most jobs land inside these ranges. Where yours falls depends on the details.
$350–$900
Questions Walnut Creek Customers Ask
An architectural engineer focuses on building systems such as HVAC, lighting, and overall design integration. A structural engineer specializes in the load-bearing framework, analyzing foundations, beams, walls, and roofs for strength and stability. Both may collaborate on projects, but structural engineers are the ones who certify that a building can safely support its intended loads.
