Pressures we calculate
We calculate lateral earth pressure, water pressure, surcharge from loads above the wall, and applicable seismic pressures. The design must account for these loads together, rather than treating soil pressure as the only force on the wall.
Stability checks for the wall and slope
We check internal stability, sliding, overturning, bearing, and overall slope stability as applicable to the wall system and site. These checks address different concerns: the wall’s own stability, whether it can slide or tip, how it bears on the ground, and whether the surrounding slope is stable.

Drainage and local soil conditions
We include perforated drain pipe and granular drainage backfill in the drainage design.
Soil conditions vary across Walnut Creek. We do not assume soil-related movement is the same across town.
Clear Lake soil is poorly drained. Its seasonal water table can sit several feet down in late summer and rise close to the surface during wet winter months. We check that condition when assessing below-grade work and water pressure on the wall.
Retaining wall engineering cost
Engineering design for a standard residential retaining wall 6–10 feet high, with some tiering or surcharge, costs $2,500–$4,000. This range is for engineering design, not wall construction.

What to Expect
Here's how a request moves from first contact to a clear answer.
-
Tell Us What You Need
A short call is enough for us to understand the project and what it will take.
-
Research First
We review what's already on file, records, plans, and prior work, before anyone heads out.
-
Clear, Written Price
You get the scope and the price in writing before any work starts. No surprises.
Depending on what we find, that can mean:
- Set the wall design criteria, including wall type, design loads, and applicable site and jurisdictional requirements.
- Obtain or review subsurface information to establish soil strength, groundwater conditions, and foundation-bearing conditions.
What to Expect to Pay
$4000–$8000
